Overall Strategy
Complete Urzatron ASAP, with enough blue mana sources. Karn toolbox to get any artifact from sideboard or exile. Jace to fateseal control the opponent. Spell Burst buyback to counter repeatedly.

Synergy Combos and Interactions
  • Karn + Mycosynth Lattice = lock down opponent, prevent producing mana, destroy all opponent's lands turn by turn,  make 6/6 creature
  • Mycosynth Lattice + Tolarian Academy = produce for each permanent you control
  • Maze of Ith + Silent Arbiter = halt all opponent's combat
  • Expedition Map = find any land, to complete Urzatron, blue source, or any utility land
  • Painter's Servant + Grindstone = mill opponent's entire library. Choose blue so you can still pitch to Force of Will
  • Time Vault + Voltaic Key = infinite extra turns
  • Emrakul + Jace / Karakas = many extra turns
  • Mindslaver + Academy Ruins = repeatedly control opponent's turns
  • Tinker + Inkwell Leviathan / Blightsteel Colossus = fast fattie
  • Karn + Spine of Ish Sah = destroy permanent and make 7/7 creature
  • Crucible of Worlds + Strip Mine / Wasteland = destroy all opponent's lands
  • Walking Ballista = ping creatures, players, planeswalkers

Overall Strategy

Stall the early game with Tangle Wire as you build your mana base. with massive mana, such as Mishra's Workshop, Cloudpost, Tolarian Academy, and Lotus Bloom. Bust out Karn and get the winning combo pieces from sideboard. Mycosynth Lattice is the safest choice if you have 6 mana. Otherwise Painter's Servant + Grindstone is the fastest win; while Time Vault + Voltaic Key is cheaper but slower. Alternatively, Tinker in Blightsteel Colossus or Inkwell Leviathan.

Synergy Combos and Interactions

  • Master Transmuter = multiple purposes. Can be cast with Mishra's Workshop mana. Deploy any artifact for only . Regenerate any artifact, including itself after blocking. Retrigger enters ability, like Witching Well, Prophetic Prism, Sundering Titan, etc.
  • Master Transmuter + Tangle Wire = Reset counters on Tangle Wire, to keep opponent's permanents perpetually tapped. Can sustain multiple Tangle Wires at same time and keep 7+ things tapped turn after turn. Remember you can tap Tangle Wire itself, so tap them first, then redeploy the one with lowest counters, tap it again. That means you only tap 4 other cards, compared to opponent's 7.
  • Shield Sphere = free early blocker that can be sacked to Tinker and Master Transmuter

Overall Strategy
Assemble Tron and blue sources. Stabilize board with Thought-Knot Seer and Batterskull, and blue spells. Finally SuperFriends for victory.

Planeswalkers

  • Karn, the Great Creator = banned or restricted in other formats except Modern. Central PW to retrieve the right cards from sideboard. Must have 4.
  • Jace, Wielder of Mysteries = instant win with Leveler. See combo below.
  • Jace, Unraveler of Secrets = lesser Mind Sculptor, but without fateseal. so can't lock out and oppress opponent.
  • Tezzeret, Artifice Master = create flying blockers every turn. Good card draw that doesn't cost loyalty. Ultimatum is like epic spell Eternal Dominion, but better, searching your own deck.
  • Tezzeret the Seeker = put combo pieces directly into play
  • Ugin, the Spirit Dragon = clear the board. Your only colored permanents are blue Planeswalkers. Also good finisher.

Synergy Combos and Interactions

  • Jace, Wielder of Mysteries + Leveler = instant win. Caution it's risky combo. Jace requires three , which may be difficult to cast. Do not cast Leveler without Jace on the field. Use Jace first ability after Leveler has emptied your library.
  • God-Pharaoh's Statue = replacement for Mycosynth Lattice, which is banned in Modern. Not nearly the perfect lock as Lattice with Karn. So not the goto card to fetch. But can work if opponent is low on lands. Better after Sundering Titan has removed some of their lands. Still 6/6 like Lattice. Could try to combo with Helm of the Host, see below.
  • Memnarch = turn opponent stuff into artifacts and then steal them. Artifact lands won't tap for mana with Karn on the field. With Sundering Titan, God-Pharaoh Statue, and Spell Burst, opponent will have tough time casting anything. Sadly takes three cards to emulate Mycosynth Lattice, and still fall way short in performance.
  • Silent Arbiter + Batterskull = equip Batterskull on Arbiter. It becomes 5/9, harder to die from damage. The lone creature can still block after attacking, while gaining life and rescue you from danger of low life.
  • Helm of the Host = copies equipped creature every pre combat on your turn. that means creating growing army for one time cost. On Thought-Knot Seer, exile a card from opponents hand every turn. On God-Pharaoh Statue animated by Karn, that means keep raising the cost of opponent spells +2,4,6,8...eventually they can't afford to cast another spell for the rest of the game. That's probably closest to emulate Mycosynth Lattice + Karn. Other creatures are similarly ridiculous. Imagine Sundering Titan every turn, or Wurmcoil Engine, etc.
  • Skinwing = so your creatures can block opponent flyers, and fly over theirs on offense. Living weapon means 2/2 flying ready to block.
  • Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek + Time Sieve = gain lots life and create lots of tokens and sac them for infinite turns. Each piece cost only 2 CMC, so easy to get it going. Karn and Tezzeret can get missing pieces.

Matchups

Most of the time, no need to swap cards between maindeck and sideboard, because Karn can already fetch cards from sideboard. Quite the opposite, actually leave cards in sideboard since easier to get them with Karn, than it is to try to draw them from library.

However there are a few exceptions where you want to side in something.
  • Aggro: Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista may be sided in if you need early blockers in your opening hand
  • Creature-lite: In= Negate. Out= Cyclonic Rift
